The reason this is worse in summer is not the season itself. It is that warmer water raises biological growth rates and sanitizer demand at the same time, so a routine that held all winter suddenly falls behind.

These three failures look related and get treated interchangeably, which is why people cycle through products without fixing anything.

You can have several at once. Green plus a slippery film is common and needs both treatments, because an oxidizer alone will not remove biofilm you can feel.

Why algae wins in summer

Three things change and they compound.

Light is the switch. Algae photosynthesizes. Without light it cannot bloom, no matter how warm the water gets. Longer days and higher sun angle mean an outdoor tub with a translucent or partially open cover receives far more light energy in July than in January. This is the single biggest lever you have, and it is free.

Warmer water accelerates biology. Growth rates for algae and bacteria rise substantially with temperature. A tub held at 55F is not a hostile environment for microbial life — it just slows it down. Owners running peroxide and ozone at 55F still report persistent algae, because the growth rate at that temperature is high enough to outrun a maintenance dose sized for colder water.

Cold water makes chlorine less effective. This is counterintuitive and worth understanding, because it is why cold plunge water care is not just hot tub care. New Jersey's Department of Health, in its December 2025 cold plunge guidance, states the mechanism plainly: chlorine's reaction rate is slower at lower temperatures because the molecules move more slowly, so chlorine does not disinfect as efficiently in colder water. Their recommendation for single-user units is to dump and refill on a biweekly schedule rather than rely on chemistry alone.

So the summer trap is specific: your water is warm enough for vigorous algae growth but still cold enough that chlorine underperforms.

How to clear green water

Work in this order. Skipping the physical steps is why blooms come back within days.

1. Block the light immediately. An opaque, well-fitting lid. Not a translucent cover, not a mesh screen, not a tarp with gaps. This alone stops most recurrence.

2. Shock the water. Use a strong oxidizer dose rather than your normal maintenance dose. For 3% hydrogen peroxide, a shock is several times the weekly maintenance amount of 1/2 cup per 100 gallons. Non-chlorine shock (potassium monopersulfate) also works well here. Add it after your last session of the day and let it circulate overnight.

3. Scrub every surface. Algae anchors to walls, steps, the waterline, jets, and the temperature probe. Oxidizer in the water column does not remove attached growth. Use a soft brush or clean cloth on all wetted surfaces including under the lid, where the lid contacts water, and around fittings.

4. Run the filter continuously. Dead algae has to be physically removed or it becomes the nutrient source for the next bloom. Run the pump 24 hours during recovery and clean or replace the filter afterward, not before.

5. Reassess in 24 hours. If the water is clearing, continue. If it is still green, drain it.

When to just drain it

Drain instead of treating if any of these are true:

  • The water has been green for more than a couple of days
  • It is green and slimy, meaning established biofilm
  • You cannot see the bottom clearly
  • It has an active swampy smell
  • You have already shocked it once without improvement

Draining a plunge costs a fill of water and an evening of chiller run time. Repeatedly dosing water that is already lost costs more than that in product, and you plunge in it in the meantime. For summer specifically, plan on more frequent full changes than your winter schedule, and treat that as normal rather than a failure.

Preventing recurrence

  • Opaque, sealed lid, on whenever you are not in the tub. Blocks light, keeps debris out, reduces evaporation, and cuts heat gain.
  • Shower before entering. The most effective single habit in cold plunge water care. It removes the sweat, oils, lotion, and dead skin that feed both algae and biofilm before they get in the water.
  • Increase oxidizer frequency in summer, not just dose. Twice weekly beats a single larger weekly dose, because you are covering a higher continuous demand.
  • Run the pump more. Circulation gets water past your filter and sanitizer instead of letting it stratify. It also disrupts anything trying to settle.
  • Consider ozone or UV if you want hands-off sanitation. Both reduce ongoing chemical demand, though neither substitutes for a physical scrub.
  • Test rather than guess. Sanitizer demand in July is genuinely different from December. Strips are cheap.
  • Skip cyanuric acid outdoors. Stabilized chlorine products contain it, and New Jersey's guidance prohibits cyanuric acid in outdoor cold plunge units outright.

The oil slick and scum ring

Different problem, same season, frequently the same tub.

A rainbow sheen on the surface, a greasy tide line at the waterline, or a slippery film on the temperature probe is body soil: skin oils, sunscreen residue, lotion, deodorant, and hair product. Cold water does not emulsify oils the way hot water does, so they float and accumulate rather than dispersing.

What actually works:

  • Rinse before you get in. Again, this is the fix. Most of the load never has to enter the water.
  • A scum sponge or absorbent floating disc. A few dollars, sits on the surface, physically removes the oil layer. Replace it when it stops floating high.
  • Wipe the waterline weekly with a clean cloth before residue sets into a band. Once it hardens, it needs scrubbing.
  • Spa enzyme products break down oils and are compatible with cold water and peroxide routines.
  • Service your filter more often in summer. Oils load a cartridge quickly, and a loaded cartridge reduces flow, which reduces everything else that depends on circulation.
  • Skip heavy products on plunge days. Oil-based lotion applied an hour before a plunge ends up in the tub.

Mosquitoes and bugs in outdoor tubs

A legitimate summer concern for outdoor setups, and easier to solve than most people expect.

Standing water is a mosquito breeding site, but the timeline gives you a lot of room. Per EPA, the mosquito life cycle typically takes about two weeks and ranges from four days to a month, with the first three stages occurring in water. That means an actively circulating, covered tub is not a viable nursery, while a tub left uncovered and uncirculated for a week or more absolutely can be.

Prevention:

  • Keep the lid on. Females lay on or near water. No access means no eggs.
  • Run the pump daily. Moving water disrupts larval development, which depends on a calm surface for breathing.
  • Do not let it sit idle. The failure case is vacation: a covered but unpowered tub for two weeks in summer. Either run the pump on a timer while you are away or drain it.
  • Check the strainer and skimmer basket. This is where owners actually find larvae, because it is a calm, sheltered pocket of water. Rinse it out.
  • Empty the small stuff. The lid depression that holds an inch of rainwater, a bucket, the tray under the chiller. Those breed mosquitoes far more readily than a circulating tub.
  • Maintain your oxidizer. Sanitized water is a poor larval habitat.

If you find larvae, drain, scrub, refill, and put the pump on a schedule. Do not add pool algaecides or larvicides to water you immerse in without confirming the product is approved for that use.

Is green water actually dangerous?

Algae itself is generally not the direct hazard. The concern is what green water tells you: sanitizer has been inadequate for a while, which means bacterial levels are likely elevated too. Poorly maintained immersion water is associated with skin, ear, and respiratory irritation, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the organism public health codes specifically test for in spa-type water.

Practical rule: do not get into green water. It costs you one session to drain and refill. There is no version of this where treating it while continuing to use it is the better call.

Bottom line

Green means algae, algae means light, and summer means both more light and faster growth against a sanitizer that is already working at a disadvantage in cold water. Fix it in order: opaque lid, shock, scrub every surface, filter continuously, drain if it does not clear in a day. Then raise your summer maintenance frequency rather than assuming your winter routine still applies, and add a shower-first rule to cut the nutrient load at the source.
